Depression is more than being sad or down in the dumps. You may be suffering from depression if you have been feeling sad, or irritable or just very numb for most of the time for a few weeks. You may have been having lots of negative thoughts about yourself, your life as it is at the moment and the future. You may be noticing that you don’t want to be around friends and family and have stopped enjoying your usual things. Sometimes when you are depressed you can have trouble sleeping, either not being able to get to sleep or waking very early and feeling unwell. This can all make it hard to concentrate or make decisions.

Depression can happen to anyone and can be triggered by lots of things. Here are some of the most common reasons:

  • Family Breakdown
  • Bereavement
  • Neglect
  • Illness
  • Abuse
  • Bullying
  • Friendship difficulties

What can I do to help myself?

There are a lot of ways that you can help yourself to feel better and it’s often the simple things that help the most. Here a few ways that might help:

  • Try and spend time with a close friend even when you don’t feel like it
  • Listen to upbeat music
  • Have a relaxing bath
  • Write down your thoughts in a journal
  • Put up favourite photographs where you can see them
  • Spend time with a pet if you have one
  • Watch a funny DVD or TV programme
  • Curl up with a favourite book
  • Consider talking to your GP
