Support for Parents
I am a Parent or carer, how can i support my young person?
Supporting a young person through a difficult time can feel overwhelming. At OTR, we offer a variety of support options to help parents and carers develop the knowledge, confidence and tools needed to support your young person.
Whether it is 121 or family counselling you need, participating in our parent group work “You First” course, or simply helping your young person take a look through our signposting and resources page we can help. Read more below about the different types of support we can offer.
Counselling for you
If you are a parent or carer of a young person aged between 11-25 you can access our 121 counselling services. Whether that is to help support your young person who is going through a difficult time or to work on yourself. Your young person doesn’t need to have accessed counselling with us or be on our waiting list, you just need to be a parent or carer of a young person between 11-25.
We offer 6 weekly sessions of confidential 121 counselling at our Leigh Park centre. Each session is up to 50 minutes and will be on the same day and time each week with the same counsellor.
For more information, please visit our counselling page.
"You First" Parent/Carer group work
We run a unique program for parents and carers called You First. It is a 6 week course that runs 2 hours per week, held at a local venue in our community for parents of young people aged between 11-25.
It provides a mixture of psychoeducation, coaching, parenting tools, a supportive listening space, and the opportunity to engage with a community of parents and carers with similar lived experiences.
This unique blend endeavors not only to support you but also help explain and explore how the teenage brain wiring works to support you through the teenage years of your young person.
Any parent or carer can take part in You First with a child 11 to 25. At the time of taking part, parenting may feel okay or may feel challenging. You First will support all parents and carers in supporting themselves and understanding their young person.
Family Counselling
At OTR we offer Family Counselling for families of children between the ages of 8-25.
Family counselling focuses on the relationships and interactions between the family and offers a neutral and safe space to allow everyone to be heard and find alternative ways for families to navigate forward to be happier and healthier.
Family Counselling is for children aged 8 and over and their parents, carers, siblings, blended families, and grandparents for up to 6 family members.
Our Family Counselling sessions are held at Leigh Park Community Center
