Young Carer

Young Carers

A Young Carer is a young person aged between 8-18 years who supports someone in their household such as a parent or sibling, who has a long-term illness, disability or is struggling with their mental health or an addiction.

A Young Carer may help out with:

  • Cooking meals and going shopping.
  • Supporting a sibling with daily tasks and keeping them safe.
  • Looking after younger siblings while parents are supporting another sibling or not feeling well.
  • Helping someone get dressed.
  • Supporting someone to effectively communicate.
  • Giving emotional support.

Our Young Carers programme will ensure that Young Carers living in Havant borough have someone to talk to without fear of judgment, can make friends with peers who understand what they are going through and through our days out, ensure they can have the same opportunities as their non-caring peers.

Our Young Carers clubs meet fortnightly on Thursday evenings for 2 hours to have a break from their caring role, where they can be a young person and take part in some exploration of their caring role, coping techniques, strategies and self care, with each club offering free time & fun.

Young Adult Carer’s – ages 17 to 25

Transitioning between a Young Carer and a Young Adult Carer can be tricky,  when juggling caring, education, work, relationships and general day to day. The Young Adult Carers meet monthly where they are able to access support for their caring responsibilities, talk about challenges with their peers and get support with a range of things such as writing CVs, personal statements, applying for jobs and signposting to services that are able to support with specific issues.

Young Adult Carers ensures support does not abruptly stop when a Young Carer reaches 18, you can still attend Young Adult Carers even if you have not attended Young Carers. Sessions last 90 minutes. For further information, please email young.carers@otr-south.org.uk
